Reconciliation

At the National Level of the United Church

In 1986, at its 31st General Council, the United Church of Canada responded to the request of Indigenous Peoples that it apologize to them for its part in colonization.

In 1998, the United Church of Canada apologized specifically to former students of United Church Indian Residential Schools, and to their families and communities. (More information available here.)

In 2012, the United Church changed its crest to include the four traditional colours of the indigenous medicine wheel and the phrase “All My Relations” was added in the Mohawk language. This enhances the “That all may be one” which was already on the crest in Latin. Mohawk was chosen as because the first documented ministry between Indigenous Peoples and the Methodist missionaries began in 1822.

Here at Whitehorse United Church

In 2018, a circle of people from the Whitehorse United Church congregation formed a circle and read the apology of the United Church of Canada to First Nations peoples.
