Refugee Sponsorships

Whitehorse United Church carried out its first private sponsorship in the 1980s with the Vietnamese boat people.  The next sponsorship was done in the 1990s with a family from the former Yugoslavia.

More recently, the congregation has sponsored first a mother and two children (Eritreans resident in Israel).

Working together with the local refugee sponsoring organization, we are working to establish an Eritrea-Canadian community here in Whitehorse.

Funding for these sponsorships has come from several congregational members who have contributed generously and quickly.

Working through the United Church of Canada’s Refugee Sponsorship Agreement, we have completed the sponsorship of an Eritrean mother and two children and have applied to sponsor an Eritrean family of five.

The Kidane family arrived in June 2023 and are busy beginning their lives again in Whitehorse.
